Some shipyards lack the detailed model and documentation of their new constructions, or they made changes during the construction so they don’t have the exact model of the vessel. We do provide reverse engineering of the vessel, piping, equipment as well as the hull and the propeller for various purposes.
What is Ballast Water Treatment?
Water has been used as ballast to stabilize vessels at sea. Ballast water is pumped in to maintain safe operating conditions throughout a voyage. This practice reduces stress on the hull, provides transverse stability, improves propulsion and maneuverability, and compensates for weight changes in various cargo load levels and due to fuel and water consumption. While ballast water is essential for safe and efficient modern shipping operations, it may pose serious ecological, economic and health problems due to the multitude of marine species carried in ships’ ballast water. These include bacteria, microbes, small invertebrates, eggs, cysts and larvae of various species. The transferred species may survive to establish a reproductive population in the host environment, becoming invasive, out-competing native species and multiplying into pest proportions.
In response to these ecological risks, the International Marine Organization (IMO) adopted the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments in 2004. Various manufacturers have ballast water management systems. However the type of ballast water treatment system a ship needs will vary based on size, available space, budget, and more.
For every ballast water treatment system installation, the ship needs to be surveyed and the equipment location should be determined. Once this is determined, the needed piping needs to be designed specific to that ship. This need, puts ballast water treatment surveys at the core of these projects.
When we are called for a Ballast Water Treatment project, we plan number of our field crews to go in and capture all the data in a timely manner. According to the BWT project needs, we do scans in the engine room, the deck and in the tanks. For customers that are more comfortable working with 3D models, we create asbuilt 3D models of the related piping and equipment.
